In the past year, large language models have begun to demonstrate offensive cyber capabilities; they are becoming proficient at hacking. How will these changes affect the cyber domain? To predict the consequences, three properties of the cybersecurity landscape need to be considered.

The security world, for as long as I’ve been in it, has hoped for the “shift left” philosophy to save security. The idea, originally coined by Larry Smith in 2001, is a simple philosophy: the sooner you catch vulnerabilities and other security problems in software development or deployment, the better and less costly it will be.

Cybercrime is no longer a nuisance. It’s an industry. A fast-growing, well-funded, borderless operation built on stealing data, extorting companies, and exploiting every crack in the digital world. And right now, they’re moving faster than most organizations can defend themselves.
